When A 2 Minute Favour Reaches 2 Million People


A few weeks ago I had a client call me in a panic, “I desperately need a photograph taking of a new mug design and I need it now” was pretty much the gist of it.

I didn’t ask too many questions, I had to be out of the house in 25 minutes’ time to get to another shoot but I thought as it was only a mug I could probably do it if they could get it over to me quickly. It didn’t take him long to get to my door, I had 5 minutes before I had to leave the house and a mug in hand to photograph, I was going to have to work quick.

I put the mug on my chopping board and blurred the background to the point of oblivion in order to hide my messy kitchen that would have been in the shot behind it. This shot was lit completely with natural light, my kitchen window was to the left of the mug and I handed my client a piece of white cardboard to hold to the right of the mug to bounce some of the window light back into the shot, ensuring the right side of the mug wasn’t lost into shadows.

Handing the memory card to my client so he could retrieve the image himself I set off for another shoot and forgot completely about it. This was until a few days ago when said client sends me an email to tell me that some of my product photography had been featured in a newsletter going out to 2 million people…

My little 2 minute photo shoot of a mug had just been sent to 2 million people in a Not On The High Street email generating my client thousands of pounds of additional revenue, not bad for 2 minutes work!
