The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials are a 3 day event which have been classified in the top 6 leading 3 day horse events in the world. This prestigious event takes pace every year at Burghley House in Stamford, Lincolnshire and is an event I’ve had my eye on to get along to photograph for a couple of years now.
It has always seemed that whenever the event took place I was booked elsewhere or had other commitments, so when the opportunity to head along and photograph the event arose, I jumped at the chance (excuse the pun!).
Like with most event photography, photographing horses presents a host of challenges, the number one challenge being they are of course constantly moving and jumping meaning there is a high chance of getting motion blur in the images if you don’t set the camera up right. Other challenges on the day included changing lighting conditions with the sun constantly going behind clouds and then coming out again and finding good shooting spots without getting in any of the crowds way.
The below photo set were taken in about an hour and is the finals of the Burghley Horse Trials show jumping stage which saw Andrew Nicholson crowned as the eventual winner of the 3 day event. I used a Canon 5D MKIII & 70-200mm f2.8 L lens for most of the shots which is fast becoming one of my favorites for event photography given it’s quality and the fact that it is so universal.
