From there we’ll look at the basics of how to capture great audio, using external lighting to create cinematic footage and stabilising your videos so all your clips look nice and smooth. If you’ve not yet bought any camera equipment your welcome to borrow ours and throughout the course we can make recommendations as to the best equipment to help you with the video making process.
Working as a professional filmmaker since 2008, Paul has developed a teaching style that breaks down the video making process into easy to understand ideas and concepts. FAQ’s
Where will this course take place?
This course will be ran throughout Bristol. If you live or work centrally I’m happy to run this course at your premises, otherwise we’ll run it on the streets of Bristol giving you every opportunity to get a hands on practical experience.
Do I Need Certain Skills Or Equipment To Attend?
This is a beginners course and as such, no skills are required to attend this course. The only equipment you will need to bring with you is your DSLR or Mirrorless camera and lenses.
Can You Recommend Camera Equipment For Me Prior To Me Attending?
I get a lot of requests for help with camera equipment recommendations, almost daily in fact and offer a Personalised Photography Equipment Recommendation service which you can find by clicking here.
Recommending a camera and the best lenses to buy really has lots of different factors involved in it which need to be investigated first such as what the equipment will be most used for, budgets, your expectations on image quality, your current level and aspirations, etc. Hence the above service so we can really drill down into finding you the best equipment.
Alternatively, some people attend my courses and borrow a camera from me for the day to do so, we can then incorporate this recommendation as part of the course at no extra cost. The benefit of doing it this way is that I have a lot of cameras and lenses you can try and see the difference between prior to purchasing anything. The downside is your not learning on your own equipment of course, so there are pluses and minuses to doing it both ways, it depends on what you think works best for you.
Are You DBS Checked?
Paul is DBS checked and is happy to share a copy of his DBS certificate with any client, no matter whether they are a business, charity, organisation or individual.

Scott Hazell –
I had a brilliant 2 days with Paul, learning the basics of how to work a video camera in different lighting conditions and using manual settings to achieve different shots. I really enjoyed the mix of theoretical and practical activities, which helped reinforce my learning. I came away with great sense of energy, enthusiasm, and a solid foundation of video making knowledge to help me on my journey of becoming a professional video creator.

I really enjoyed my 2 day videography course with Paul which took place in Bristol. I learn’t all about the right settings to use, lighting, audio, editing, stabilisation, composition and a whole lot more. Paul is an excellent teacher, he makes things very easy to follow and understand.

I decided I’d like to launch my own YouTube channel but just did not know where to start when it came to filming myself, lighting the scenes or capturing clear audio. I spent two days with Paul thoroughly going over everything I needed to know and a whole lot more. The course was well designed to cover every aspect of filmmaking and Paul was easy to learn from, it felt like I was actively encouraged to ask questions which was nice. I really enjoyed the course, but most importantly the videos I’m now creating are actually far better than I ever really imagined I could.

A fantastic 2 days spent with Paul learning the basics of how to make videos with my new mirrorless camera. I say basics, I’m quite proud with how my footage is looking already having learnt so much, I’d say its quite professional indeed! Paul is a great teacher who is very happy to share his knowledge and genuinely seems to want to help you improve. I really enjoyed the course and learn’t a lot.
